Audi A4

SEAT is a Spanish automobile manufacturer that was established in May 1950 – making it a comparatively young company compared to some of the other leading car manufacturers.

As part of Spain’s post-war development strategy, the government wanted to develop their car manufacturing industry to help create jobs, and also to help the growing Spanish population become more mobile. So SEAT was initially formed as a collaboration between the state-owned Instituto Nacional de Industria (INI) which held a 51% stake, a number of Spanish banks who injected capital, and the Italian car manufacturer FIAT who provided automotive expertise.

For the first decade of the business, it was very much a Spanish affair. SEAT sourced the majority of parts from other businesses across Spain, and SEAT cars were only sold domestically – with the SEAT 600 being the first car that many Spanish families could afford.

SEAT began exporting their vehicles to international markets from the 1960’s, and it was really the international launch of the SEAT Ibiza in 1984 that was a game changer for the brand. This popular model was one of the first SEAT vehicles that was commercially available in the UK – and it became a huge success. It was really the beginning of SEAT’s reputation for producing dynamic, high-quality cars.

From a business perspective, SEAT has undergone numerous changes over the years. The partnership with FIAT ended when Volkswagen Group acquired a stake in the company in the 1980s, and SEAT officially became a subsidiary of Volkswagen in 1990.

The current SEAT lineup in the UK includes a variety of popular models.

The SEAT Ibiza is still going strong and remains a customer favourite as a comfortable, affordable car that’s ideal for urban driving.

The SEAT Leon is another standout as a family vehicle that’s enjoyable to drive, with the Leon Estate offering a step up in terms of space. The Leon has actually won a number of industry awards, including ‘Best Family Car of the Year” at the What Car? 2022 awards.

For those interested in SUVs, SEAT offers the compact Arona and the larger Ateca and Tarraco models – positioning SEAT as a competitive player in the SUV market
